For analytical geometry the slope is used in estimating growth decay of everything, and calculus is used to analyze this area of a slope precisely. The slope is really important because it is the rate of change, and knowledge is power, so if you can analyze the factors which are causing the change you can get your self back on track if some of those factors are still manageable. Do a search and you will find tons of sites though they may only cover the surface.
