: John = J
: Mary = M
: J = 5 + M
: (J + M)+10 = 39 What is this???

If John's age is J now, how old will he be 10 years from now?
If Mary's age is M now, how old will she be 10 years from now?
Try again ... what will be the sum of their ages 10 years from now?

: 5+M + M + 10= 39
: 2m=24
: m=12
: so John is 12+5=17
: check 12+17+10=39

: : : : 12) John in 5 years older then Mary. Ten years from now,the sum of their ages will be 39. How old is John now?
: : : John = J
: : : Mary = M
: : : J = 5 + M
: : : J + M = 39 < ---------- ??
: : : 5+M + M = 39
: : : 2M = 34
: : : M = 17
: : : so J = 22
: : : check 17 + 22 = 39
