: so I worked out the problem
: ===> x = (-1.6180340) and x = (.6180340) [1]
: The book had this in radical form, so I wonder if there was a different way of doing this problem or if they just converted these decimals to radical form. I don't know how to get the radical form from these decimals :(, could someone show me how please.
: x= -(1/2)+(1/2)sqrt 5 and x= -(1/2)-(1/2)sqrt 5 [2]

What are you asking?
For you to get [1], you first had to get [2], right?
Btw, [2] should be written: [-1 + sqrt(5)] / 2 and [-1 - sqrt(5)] / 2
