Backwards problem solving...

I'm stuck on this problem, and my group members can't figure it out. I thought I'd never see one of these stupid "backwards solving" problems after Algebra I..

Marina had a supply of blank computer disks. Dan needed some disks, so Marina gave him half of her supply, plus one. Then Phyllis stopped by and took half of Marina's remaining disks, plus one. Next, Marina gave Roger half of the disks she had left, plus one. At this point, Marina saw that she had only one disk left. How many did she originally have?

We came up with a few numbers, but they were just guesses. 16, 31, 28.. but how do you actually solve the problem?
