The object of this problem is to find x.
x is the unknown, so that is why you feel uncertainty when you try a problem like this, because you are dealing with the unknown quantity of x. Do not just memorize it, see it.
Do one step at a time.
1/2 x -1 = -1
so add 1 to both sides
1/2 x -1+1 = -1+1
1/2x = 0
divide both sides by 1/2 or mulitply both sides by 1/2's reciprocal of two
x = 0/(1/2)which is zero
so you check to make sure
(1/2)(0)-1 =-1
