Mazda MPV ('97)
The MPV (multipurpose vehicle) was styled at Mazda's Technical Center in California. Mazda deviated from the winning front-drive layout used in Chrysler's minivans: The MPV has a front-engine rear-drive layout. Four-wheel drive is optional. The suspension uses struts in front, and a live axle in the rear; coil springs are fitted at all four wheels. To make room for the rear axle, the load floor has an eight-inch step-up in back. The only available engine is a 155-horsepower SOHC 3.0-liter V-6, with two body configurations available, seven- and eight-passenger setups. The front end was stretched about eight inches last year, but little was gained in the process other than new styling. A power moonroof is optional. The MPV has less room inside than most minivans, but its smaller size means better maneuverability. The MPV can tow 4500 pounds.
