Important advances in battery technology led to electric cars capable of speeds up to 80km/hr and a range of 160 km or more. Although still a small industry in the early 1980s, Electric -cars production is expected to become significant if General Motors Corp. implements its plan to produce electric-powered commuter-type cars in the mid 1980s. Although no other large manufacturer was as enthusiastic about electric vehicles, such cars are becoming more and more popular because they can be charged overnight. That is when the demand on electric power generating stations is low. Because most of these stations use coal, mass use of electric vehicles could lower the demand for crude oil.
