Aquaculture in Israel actually began in the 1970’s mostly because all
of the fish bought in Israel prior to this needed to be imported at
higher prices. One of the founding companies that began to culture
fish was "Aquaculture Production Technology Ltd" (APT).
This company and others were able to create aquaculture farms (to
breed fish) without having any nearby water sources (streams, lakes,
rivers, underground water, etc.). Even without these essential
resources a very lucrative and now essential (to Israel’s economy)
business has developed. Israel’s aquaculture farms have been able to
farm many fish which include: Carp, Tilapia (all-male hybrids),
Mullet (Mugil sp.), Catfish (Clarias sp.), Fresh water prawn
(Macrobrachium rosenbergii), Australian crayfish (cherax sp.), Sea
bream, Sea bass, Trout, Fresh water pink salmon. Many of the
techniques to breed (or farm) these fish were developed and perfected
in Israel and have created an entirely new branch of the Israeli
economy.
