Additional Information about this beginning.... On November 29, 1947, theGeneral Assembly of the United Nations, decided to partition the land intotwo sovereign states, one Jewsih and one Arab. the Jewish state was tohave an area of 14,000 sq. kn and did not include Jerusalem or the road toJerusalem and most of the Galilee. At the conclusion of the report, aninvasion of the Arab armies began. The war ended leaving 6000 Israelisoldiers dead, 1% of that tiny and newest of nations.

"On the 29th of November 1947, the General Assembly of the United Nationsdecided to establish a Jewish State. As in a dream we went out to dance inthe streets of our towns, and we danced till dawn. What we had been giventhat night was no more than a faint copy of the great original dream-just atiny, crooked, truncated mini-state. And not even that: all we had reallyreceived was a poor little piece of paper, and mighty foes were alreadygathering to tear it to shreds.
But sill we went out to dance in the streets-and we were right to do so.We knew in our hearts that a page had been turned, a new chapter opened.What had been would never be again, and the depths of the danger werematched by the height of our hopes.
One day a teacher will stand up in front of his class and say: The Jewishwar of liberation lasted from the beginning of the twentieth century untilthe date written on the blackboard. It was a long and bitter war, withmany vicissitudes, victories and setbacks, and occasional times of truce.On that day the page was turned and it was time for the really importantquestions to be asked:
What would the Jews do with the freedom which had cost the blood and sweatof three generations?Would the Jews emerge from the fire better or worse than they had beenbefore entering it? The answers to these questions lie with us. They donot depend on the super-powers, but on us alone. From this day on, whathas been will never be again.
