Trees and woodland areas were a lot different from the wide areas of grassland that was quickly spreading. Grass invited many mammals to come there, and for a good reason. Woodlands can only support a restricted number of animals because trees are so large and take most energy for themselves. Grass, on the other hand was very, very plentiful during this time, and it could renew itself quickly, whereas trees could not.
