Geology This is the most recent period in all of geologic time. Continents have been in their modern-day positions. This period also saw a major Ice Age in the Pleistocene and the effect that humans had on the landscape and environment.   Animal Life Humans are the stars of this period, as they came down from the trees and developed apart from the rest of our mammal cousins. Extinction of many animals has occurred because human actions, but humans have also pushed for increased protection of endangered species.   Plant Life Humans have cultivated land and made hybrids of plants to suit their need. None of us could have survived without the help of these Quaternary plants.
