Ferns had their beginning in the Devonian Period, with a bunch of "experimental" plants of the time. Psilophyton was a plant with many, many branches. Some of these were prickly. They are directly related to the fern's evolution. Ferns also started to produce spores, which is how ferns reproduce. Spores are made on the bottom side of their leaves. The spores then fly off in the breeze and start to grow on moist ground. But they don't grow into ferns just yet. They sprout into a tiny plant, which then makes the male and female cells. The new fern grows on this plant and they remain together for the rest of their lives. Ferns were very abundant during the Jurassic, meaning that ferns welcome hot humid weather. Ferns are still around today, although they are not as esteemed as the flowering plants. |
