P1MASCOTS.GIF (8637 bytes) Mascots play an important role in any sporting event, even the Olympics! As the 2000 Olympics are in Australia it seemed only suitable that SOCOG made the mascot/s Australian and that is exactly what they have done.

For the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, SOCOG have released three mascots. Here are their names and what they represent:

Olly

Is a Kookaburra. He got his name from the Olympics. Kookaburras are only found in Australia and are one of the most well known Australian Animals.

Syd

Is a Platypus. He was named after Sydney, the site of the 2000 Olympic Games. Platypus' again are only found in Australia.

Millie

Got it's name from Millenium this is because the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games are to be held in the first year of the new millennium. Millie is an echidna, an echidna is a bit like a porcupine, with the spikes protruding from it's back.
