Facts and Records Golden Records The most gold medals won by one competitor is ten, by the Us athlete Ray Ewry. He won these in the standing jumps, events no longer held, from 1900 to 1908. But two of his medals were won in the unofficial games of 1906. Nine gold medals were won by the Finnish athlete Paavo Nurmi (1920-1928), the Soviet gymnast Larissa Latynina (1956-1964) and the Us swimmer Mark Spitz (1968-1972) including three relays. The most individual gold medals won in a single Games is five, by Us speed skater Eric Heiden in 1980. Only two competitors have won the same event in four separate Games, Danish yachtsman Paul Elvstrom (1948-1960) and Us discus thrower Al Oerter (1956-1968) |
