You must use your entire body, starting with the legs for initial propulsion. Exact techniques will differ from person to person, but generally you must start with your body and paddle lower than the default ready position, and end higher in a quick and smooth motion. Start the motion fully coiled (waist and shoulder) and weight on either left or right foot (depending on whether you're hitting forehand or backhand). Then push off with the foot first and graze the ball with a very closed racket face angle. Follow-through should be compact, but remember to go all the way through the ball. Your body should be moving upwards (i.e. standing taller) during the motion.
