Hi!

My name is Katrin Beck. I am 14 years old and live in Esslingen (Germany). My school is the Mörike-Gymnasium. I am very interested in biology. I think it is so exciting to see nature! I have already taken part in another competition: Jugend Forscht, as Titus. I chose beetles then, another not very well-known animal.

To have a closer look at the animals I decided to watch living mites. So I breeded mites that can not harm me or my classmates and I chose the floor mite. I took a terrarium and filled it with some rolled oats, flour, old corn and wood shavings. I made a stable condensidy by using a bottle with warm water and irrigating the terrarium. Finally the breeding was so successful that the animals crawled out of the container (you can see on the photo) and, to get to know the animals, it was important for me to observe living mites. Of course, I took many photos of these masses.

Drunken ticks I took from the dog of our neighbor called Klemens. To take a photo of the front and the back side I sticked them on a transparent sticky tape that I put in a tripod at the height of the camera. Our camera was the Olympus OM4 with makro objektive that was based on a shore machine.

With this device I took photos of a group of velvet mites. The photos with the same camera seen through a stereo magnifying glass were phantastic.

The work in ThinkQuest enlarged my computer knowledge and I got used to to the fantastic technic of the makro photographie. It was hard work, of course, but we had a lot of fun. It was wonderful to meet the two funny persons, I communicated via Internet, live in Esslingen.
