What do we know about mites ?

The Mites (Acari or Acarina)

are an unusual order of arthropods, they can be found all over the planet and in every habitat from the sea, to fresh water, as well as on animals and plants. There are 45000 described species in over 1 700 genera - a small fraction (perhaps 5%) of the number of species estimated to be alive today .

Mites are also among the oldest of all terrestrial animals, the earliest known fossil Mites date from the early Devonian period (Protoacarus crani) 376 to 379 million years ago.

What size do they have ?
