History
Founded in the 12th century as Edo, it was the capital of the shogunate from 1603 to 1868,
when the emperor was restored to power and made Edo the nation's capital, renaming it Tokyo.
In 1923 an earthquake and fire destroyed nearly half the city.
Heavy Allied bombing in World War II devastated much of Tokyo, including nearly all of its industrial plants.
The only things left intact were the imperial palace and surrounding embassies,
the diet (government) building, and many office buildings.
The city's famed landmarks include the Meiji and Hie shrines, ancient temples, and
the Korakuen landscape garden. In 1945-1951 US General MacArthur helped rebuild Japan.
The Emperor was divested of his claim to divinity and a parliamentary system of government is set up.
In 1980's Tokyo Stock Market boomed and Japan became the world greatest trading nation.
In 1995 Kobe Earthquake devastated Kobe and surrounding areas.
