The Brazilian Government is constructing a great technology system, the Surveillance System of Amazon - SIVAM - that aims to do the surveillance and to get all kind of information about Amazon.)
Great investments are being made to guarantee the system operation in 2002. The whole system is formed by fixed and mobile radars, thermal sensors, meteorological stations, satellites and many other equipment. The information will be kept by a complex electronic web: the centers of operation, for example, will receive data from satellites, like the LANDSAT (Clique here, to see Amazonian LANDSAT images from National Institute of Spacial Resarch - INPE).The implementation of the system has already begun: in São Gabriel das Cachoeiras, in Amazonas State, there is a radar and an Aeronautics' residential village; in Tabatinga (in Amazonas State), another radar is present, and a new Aeronautics' residential village is being constructed; in Roraima State, a radar can be seen, besides an airplane squadron in Boa Vista; near Manaus (in Amazonas State), we can see another radar.

The computer programs that will be used in SIVAM are top secret. They are essential to the system operation. For example: starting from the location of a clandestine landing, the system will be capable to indicate the most probable points of operation of an illegal prospecting in just three minutes. With these information on hands, the Federal Police can start to investigate the situation. The simulations that are being created during the implementation phase, will be the basis for the real operations in 2002.
