Michelangelo's "Pieta"

The "Pieta"

Michelangelo's Pieta is made from marble around 1498 through 1500 and is currently located in St. Peter’s Basilica. In 1498 Michelangelo received a commission from a Roman Cardinal asking if he could create a statue of the Mary clothed, with the dead Christ in her arms, and life size. Two years later, when the work was completed, the Art Critics exclaimed it was a masterpiece. One interesting fact about the Pieta is that it is the only work Michelangelo ever did that he signed.
