Antarctica Peninsula

"No man will
venture farther than I have done, and the lands that may lie to the south will never be
explored." -Captain Cook
The Antarctic Peninsula is the
northernmost tip of Antarctica. This Peninsula contains over 70% of the world's fresh
water in its cap. The lowest recorded temperature there was -128.6 degrees Fahrenheit /
-89.2 degrees Celsius and the thickest ice is over 16,000 ft. thick (5000 m). Most of
Antarctica is inhabited by the marine mammals, such as seals, whales, and penguins,
however many tours of this northernmost tip are set up. During the winter Antarctica
almost doubles in size. American Nathaniel Palmer explored this site in 1820 and named it
Palmer Peninsula however, in 1964 it was renamed to the Antarctic Peninsula with two
provinces the northern Graham Land and the southern Palmer Land. The Antarctic
Peninsula is considered one of the twenty natural wonders.
