Although there were many people who contemplated and contributed to aviation throughout history, what we consider modern aviation was mostly shaped by a select group of people. Around the turn of the century the race for flight suddenly sped up thanks to advances in engine technology and increased public interest. Those who did well at this point would have a large hand in shaping the aviation industry that was to come.
