Dr. Susanna Catalina Raimondi

Cytogenetics

Dr. Susanna Raimondi grew up in a small town in Argentina with a population of 2000 people. She knew at a very young age that she wanted to study biochemistry simply because there was a lack of choices as to what kind of classes one could take in high school.

She now works at Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, directing the clinical cytogenetics laboratory. She has been working for the past 14 years at St. Jude. Her work consists mainly of testing to evaluate chromosomal abnormalities in children. Her work deals with the mitosis phase of cell division.

Dr. Raimondi has spent the last 23 years studying genetics. She came to America to go to college on a scholarship from the Rotary International Club.

Dr. Susanna Catalina Raimondi says that women only make up about two to three percent of geneticists. Despite all of these odds and lack of participation of women, Dr. Raimondi says that she would not trade her job and   research for anything in the world.
