Caroline Herschel


1750-1848

Caroline Herschel was born in Hannover, Germany, in 1750. She became the first noted woman Astronomer. Her work was mainly to assist her brother, Sir William Herschel, another famous astronomer, in his work.

On her own though, she discovered her first comet in 1786, with the discovery of seven more comets coming in the years following.

In the year 1828, Caroline Herschel was presented with a gold medal from the Royal Astronomical Society of Great Britain for her work dealing with the cataloguing of the observations and discoveries done by her older brother, Sir William Herschel.

Caroline Herschel died in 1848 after discovering many   nebulae also, including the nebula that is associated with the Andromeda galaxy.
