Alice Hamilton


1869-1970

Alice Hamilton was born in 1869. She studied the pathology of industrial diseases and received her degree from the University of Michigan in 1893. Alice graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1897. She was the first woman to be accepted to the school. Her first job was as professor at Northwestern University's Women's Medical School. After that, she began researching factory workers' health. She realized that many employers did not look after their employees' health and employees were suffering.

Alice dedicated her life to researching employees' health. She was one of the world's leading scientists in industrial medicine. Alice wrote a biography, "Exploring The Dangerous Medicine." She was President of the National Consumer's Leagues from 1944 to 1949. She died in 1970.
