Dr. Margaret Geller

Margaret Geller was encouraged to become a scientist by her father who was a chemist. She was only the second woman to graduate with a Ph. D. in physics from Princeton University. She is now an astronomer who works at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. In 1985, Margaret teamed up with fellow astronomer John Huchra in order to begin the difficult task of creating a new survey of galaxies.

Margaret Geller is also famous for her individual work of mapping the universe. The original view of the galaxies that she got appeared to be like a stick figure surrounded by mostly empty space.

Margaret Geller, in recent years, teamed up with filmmaker Boyd Estuus to turn her journey of mapping out the universe into a 40-minute film. The film documents the hard work Professor Geller and her students go through in order to measure the red shifts of galaxies to add to already known knowledge of the structure of the universe. It is hoped by Margaret Geller that this video, with real footage of women, will inspire many future scientists.
