Lesson plan: "Future Scientists--My Future Contribution To Science"

A Fourth Grade ongoing project in Three Phases

Phase I- First Day of Science Class Assignment: Write about a contribution that you might make one day to a field of science, medical, engineering, etc. [ My students chose wonderful contributions based on personal experiences such as finding a cure for liver disease because a grandfather had been lost to it, or help for premature newborns. This made the assignment meaningful to them.] Decide the age you will be when you make this contribution. Use your math skills to figure out what year it would be. Then draw a portrait of yourself at that age. (Lastly, we edited this work for spelling, punctuation, etc.)

Phase II- Using this fabulous "W.I.S." website, go to the "Future Scientists" database. Students enter their information from the Phase I assignment into the database. They become part of the World Wide Web!

Phase III- (Students are first paired, by the teacher, with volunteer mentors from the "Mentors" database, according to their chosen fields.) Students write five guiding questions that they want to ask their mentors, about how they might begin to work toward achieving their goal. Students e-mail their mentors with the questions, and continue to communicate with their mentors as an ongoing project. [Please note: All e-mails come to the teacher's e-mail address, and are previewed by the teacher.]
