Gerty Cori was born in Czechoslovakia. She attended the medical school of German University of Prague and graduated
in 1920. Gerty and her husband Carl became biochemists. They both studied malignant diseases at the New York State
Institute. She and her husband are known for the "Cori Ester." This is the isolation of the compound Glucose. They
are also known for the
"Cori Cycle".
This is the process of how lactic acid is oxidized in the liver from carbon dioxide and water or it is changed back to
glycogen. Gerty and Carl won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1947. Her research has a great impact on medicine today.
