Eileen M. Collins

Eileen M. Collins was the first woman ever to pilot a   NASA space shuttle mission. The mission that she piloted included a docking with the Russian space station Mir and the deployment and retrieval of the satellite Spartan 204.

Ms. Collins was born in1956 in Elmira, New York. Her parents are James and Rose Marie Collins. She is currently married to Pat Youngs and the two have one child together.

Her education includes graduating from Elmira Free Academy in 1974. She received an associate of science degree in mathematics and science from Corning Community College in 1976, along with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and economics from Syracuse University in 1978. Eileen graduated from the Air Force Test Pilot school in 1990.

Over her career at NASA she has logged more than 4000 flight hours in over 30 different types of aircraft, along with working as an aircraft commander and instructor pilot.
