At the tender age of sixteen, Annie Jump Cannon was one of the first young women from Delaware to attend college. She chose to focus her studies on physics at Wellesley College. Following her graduation, she also developed skills in photography and traveled to Spain in 1892 to photograph the solar eclipse.
In 1894, Annie returned to Wellesley to assist in the physics laboratory. She studied mathematics and advanced physics,
with courses in Astronomy added in later. Her teachers called her a natural for a career in astronomy because of her
interests in stars, photography, and
light spectrums.
In 1897, Annie Jump Cannon joined the staff at the Harvard College Observatory. She worked there for over 40 years. Jump Cannon named and catalogued over 300,000 stars. There is also a classifying system that she helped to develop that is still in use today.
