Margaret Burbridge was born on August 12, 1919, to parents who both studied Chemistry at the Manchester School of Technology in England. Even before she reached her decision to enter into the field of science, it was sort of chosen for her through her genetics.
Margaret states that her earliest remembrance of wanting to go into astronomy came at the tender age of just four during a boat crossing from England to France.
Margaret Burbridge is Principal Investigator of the University of California at San Diego contract with NASA
for the science and data analysis for the Faint Object Spectrograph on the
Hubble Space Telescope. She is also a co-investigator on the original
team created to build the Faint Object Spectroscope.
She has received many awards along with her husband, including the Warner Prize in Astronomy in 1959. She was also President of the American Astronomical Society from 1976 until 1978. Margaret Burbridge has received twelve honorary Doctor of Science degrees from various universities and colleges.
