Jackie Barton got her BA degree in Chemistry at Barnard College in 1974 and her Ph.D. in Chemistry from Columbia University in 1979. She is currently a professor of Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology. She is known internationally for her knowledge of metal complex interactions with nuclei acids and design of metal complexes that acknowledge and react at certain DNA sites. Barton is also known for her expertise in biophysical probes of DNA structure and conformation.
