Spreading over Kadena town, Chatan town and Okinawa city, Kadena Air Base has two 3,700 m runways. It is the largest and most active U.S. Air Force base in the Far East and is the home base for the 18th Wing, a subordinate of the Fifth Air Force. This all around base performs such tasks as aircraft maintenance, air defense, air counterattacks, air transport, support, and reconnaissance. Also, there are support facilities in the residential district such as a school, library, baseball field, golf course, movie theater, and supermarket.
