The mainland of Zuid-Holland.

Holland had almost no bother of the storm, although the situation at the coast was very critical there were no flooding. Almost 30 meters of dune were lost. The only flooding was at Nieuwerkerk a/d IJssel in the dike of Esse, Gaasdorp and Blaardorpse polder.

Alblasserwaard

This part had to trust on its dikes because it had no inner dikes. In that way the whole polder would flood.

Flooded areas
A flooded village At 5:30 there was a small hole in the dike near Papendrecht. This hole was closed at 4 February but the polder was dry on the 18th of March.

The Island Rozenburg

At this land the 'head' of the island had 1300 m of dikes that were severely damaged. The dikes had broken at some and in that way an important part of the island became flooded.

The Island Voorne-Putten

A surface of 140 ha around Hellevoetsluis became flooded. There was now water on 12 of February. A major part of Putten was flooded. The island is safe from an even greater disaster, because thousands volunteers and the military started to re-enforce the dikes. A 10 kilometers long wooden dam protected a dike near the channel. The gaps in this wall were filled with clay. This dam was built in 10 days.

The island De Hoekse Waard

From all sides this island was attacked by water. Although the dikes were in perfect condition still 4000 ha was flooded. Later another 5900 ha flooded.

The island De Tiengemeten

For the dikes were too low the water simply washed over them. Al the dikes were soaked and collapsed. On Sunday the whole island was flooded. Immediately after the flood the holes were closed and because the sluices were intact the island could be drained.

The most southern island of the province Zuid-Holland was struck severely. 82% of the island was flooded. Although 17.190 ha was flooded the island was dried in 3 months except for the polder Nieuw-Stellendam there the last 50 ha was drained on July 17 1953.

The island Schouwen-Duiveland

Just like Goeree-Overvlakkee this island was seriously damaged.

The whole island was flooded except for an area near the dunes and in the center of the island. The waters have made 54 holes and the last one was closed on November 7. Even caissons were needed for closing these holes. On December 31 the last part of the 11.350 ha was drained.

The island Tholen

Half of Tholen, 6.560 ha, was flooded. On February 5th 680 ha was already dried.

St.Philipsland

The west part of St.Philipsland was flooded: 1.630 ha. Only 9.5% were saved. On March 26 all the water was drained.

The island Walcheren

Of all the islands Walcheren was damaged the least. From a total of 20.330 ha only 1150 ha was flooded. On February 4 already 720 ha has been dried and on February 15 the whole island was free of seawater. Most of the damage was found near the dunes. In Vlissingen at some places the water level was 1.20 meters high.

Noord-Beveland

From the total surface area 30% was flooded. The south part was hit the most. On May1 the last parts of these island were dried.
The flood Zuid-Beveland

20% of Zuid-Beveland was flooded. Just as on Noord-Beveland the north part stayed remarkably dry. On August 25 the last parts were dried.

Zeeuws-Vlaanderen

Of all Zeeuws-Vlaanderen the west part suffered the least but many dunes were diminished. Only 1% of western Zeeuws-Vlaanderen was flooded. On the East Side there was 7% flooded. On April 10 all flooded areas were dried.

Land van Heusden en Altena
