1. When the water hits the surface of the dike irregularly the clay layer of the dike will become uncovered.

2. The force of the waves is reduced near the top of the dike and much water is flushed over and the core of the dike absorbs more water and is saturated like a sponge.

3. The outer clay layer and the grass are struck away and the soil underneath slides and a gap is made.

4. More material of the dike is sliding.

5. The water flows through the gap and more of the core is washed away and the gap grows bigger.
