GeneralWhyTroublesThe planSluicesConstruction

The dam was divided in two parts: the north part from the locks to the Grevelingen-dam and the south part from the locks to St.Philipsland.
First they started to create an island on the place the locks must be build. From this artificial island to the Grevelingen-dam a 700 meter long bridge was constructed. This bridge was only for logistic purposes and was removed when the road over the dam was finished.

The procedure:
  • A ship enters the lock from the Oosterschelde, the saltwater side.
  • The gates close.
  • The water level in the lock is lowered by pumping the salt water out at the bottom of the lock. At the top part fresh water is pumped in from the east side of the locks.
  • When the water level is at the correct height and the lock is filled with fresh water the gates at the east side can be opened.

Entering the Oosterschelde

  • A ship enters the lock form the east side and wants to sail to the Oosterschelde.
  • The gates close.
  • Fresh water on top is pumped away and at the bottom sea water is pumped in.
  • When the water level is the same as in the Oosterschelde the gates on the west side can be opened.
