GeneralWhyTroublesThe planSluiceBuilding

Philipsdam birdseye view The Philipsdam is situated between St.Philipsdam and the already built Grevelingendam. This dam makes the connection between Brabant and Schouwen-Duiveland. To ensure a tidal change in the Oosterschelde two dams were needed: the Oesterdam and the Philipsdam. The Philipsdam needed locks and sluices to have fresh water on the east side and salt water on the west side, the Oosterschelde. With normal locks and sluices each time a ship passes the Oosterschelde will be polluted with fresh water and the other side will be polluted with salt water from the Oosterschelde. Of course this was unacceptable so they had to develop an unique sluice-system to divide these two different kinds of water.
