GeneralHistoryObjectionWhyThe planThe construction

The Hollandse IJssel dam, was the first dam of the Deltaworks. The dam had to be made with two gates. This was necessery because otherwise ships wouldn't be able to sail on the Hollandsche IJssel. They started building in 1954. The dam was ready in 1958. Beside from the two gates they made a lock for ships that couldn't pass because of their great height. The gates were to be 80 meter and made of steel. Four towers were made to make it possible to open the gates.

The dam is located in the Hollandsche IJssel near Rotterdam and Krimpen aan de IJssel. In that way it provides protection for the hole river the Hollansche IJssel, and for the 1,5 million people living behind the dikes of the Hollandsche IJssel
