Since 1291 the Hollande IJssel isn't a streaming river anymore. The reason is that the Hollandsche IJssel ,then a side river of the Lek, was dammed. In that way the area around the Hollandsche Ijssel didn't have so much troubles because of the floods they caused. There were so much floods because the river had to cope with so much water, because the other rivers in that area were not so deep anymore because of the sand that was transed by the river itself. 

When the armies of Napoleon occupied The Netherlands,  A. Blanken Jzn. had a plan. He wanted to build a dam between Krimpen and Capelle, on the same spot the Deltaworks are now built.
