Voorstellen voor trajecten voor Brouwersdam The main purpose of this dam is the protection of the islands Goeree-Overvlakkee and Schouwen-Duiveland. Therefore it is logic to built this dam west of these islands. There were 4 alternatives for the place of this dam. Finally option I was chosen. This plan the cheapest and better for the infra-structure of this area. On September 25 1962 this option was approved by the Government.

The dam goes from Schouwen-Duiveland to a sand bank in the middle of the Grevelingen and from there to the other side: Goeree- Overvlakkee. The central sand bank were actually two banks but the distance between these banks was so small that they made them into one. Now the dam could be divided in two: a north part and a south part. The south part will be made with a cable-railway -method and the north part will be built with caissons. Both parts will be built simultaneously.
