What are some laws relating to smoking?

In most states, there are laws that make it illegal to sell cigarettes to young people under the age of 18. Yet, many young people and teens report that they can buy cigarettes in many places. In some stores, they can even buy loosies. Loosies are single cigarettes sold out of pack. It is illegal to sell loosies to anyone. It is, however, very profitable and too common.

Since 1964, federal, state, and local governments have been making laws and regulations regarding smoking. In 1966, it became a law to put a warning label on all cigarettes sold in this country. Since 1972, this warning was required on all cigarette advertising, too. In 1987, the warning labels were put on all forms of smokeless tobacco. Many regulations have been instituted to restrict smoking in public places, office buildings, airplanes, and schools. In fact, since 1988, all United States airlines have prohibited smoking on all flights under two hours. Many restaurants have smoking and non- smoking sections. Even shopping malls have restricted smoking in common areas.
