During the 1950's society attempted a return to normality after the 2nd World war. This decade began with the coronation of Queen Elizabeth and proceeded with an era of new conservatism. Many families moved out of the cities and along with the post war baby boom, the culture of the middle class suburb was born. Along with these changes came the return to domesticity for women. The model women woman of the 1950's was an elegant housewife who could manage a family and home with a smile. Yet despite the portrayal of the home as the perfect feminine domain, many women found this domestic role confining, a theme which would explode over the next 2 decades. War time innovations such as light-weight nylon jackets and zippers suddenly flooded the mass market. The "new look" continued to gain popularity now that fabric was more readily available.
