frog experiment? A technique similar to that was used to clone Dolly. First an oocyte was collected from a Scottish Blackface ewe (female
sheep). Then the scientists removed its nucleus, making it an enucleated oocyte. They took a nucleus from a cell of a Finn Dorset sheep (while the Scottish Blackface are white sheep with a black face, the Finn Dorset are pure white sheep). This nucleus was inserted into the enucleated oocyte, and fused with the cell by a small pulse of electricity. (The other purpose of the electricity was to "wake up" the cell, so that it starts dividing again.) The cell was then moved into the reproductive chamber of a Scottish Blackface ewe. 276 attempts later, Dolly was born. She represents many hours of hard work! . |
