The fountains in Rome have not always served as embellishment. After neglecting in the Dark Ages, the popes of Rome began to sanate the city. In the previous centuries popes fought with each other and when there was a war they fled into the Castel Sant’Angelo. In 1527 Rome was besieged by other people and the popes didn’t care for the city. They went again into the Castel Sant’Angelo and many people died. The city dealed with epidemies like cholera etc. Years later they found out water was really needed and they began to rebuilt the aquaducts.Fountains were used as watersources in the beginning but because the popes liked art, they built more and more fountains and they became an essential thing of Rome. Many years later even squares were built for decoration.
