Fontana della Naiade

This fountain was built at the end of the 19^th century, so it is neither a classic one nor a one from the baroque. This fountain reminds us a little of the unity of Italy, because few days after pope Pius IX had decided to use it, the soldiers march triumphantey into Rome, which was on 20^th September 1870.

At first the fountain only consisted of waterstream but because of the emptiness the hewer futelli was ordered to make four pieces of art in it. He decided to make four nymphs, who are struggling with a seamonster. It was a masterpiece, but when the public saw the fountain in the Piazza della Republicca, they were terribly shocked and did not accept it. So the fountain was not officially inaugurated, but some young guys removed the scaffolding and the next day there was not anyone who did disturb it.

Nowadays, since 30 year ago there is a new statue in the basin. This one was placed because of the government hopes in this way to fight against the violence that is done to nature.
