Viking 2 Orbiter Images

Summit of Alba Volcano, Mars

Mars This Viking 2 Orbiter image shows the summit of the Martian volcano Alba Patera. Alba is about 1700 km in diameter, but only a few km higher than the surroundings, much flatter than the Tharsis volcanoes. Part of an old caldera rim can be seen at the bottom left of the image, most has been covered by later lava flows, emanating from the younger caldera at the lower right of the image. The flows can be seen extending to the north, which is at ~11:00. The image is about 180 km across. (Viking Orbiter 007B94)

Fractures in Ceraunius Fossae, Mars

Mars Viking 2 Orbiter image showing parallel faults and fractures in the Ceraunius Fossae region on Mars. These faults are a few km wide and extend up to 300 km as part of the system of radial faults associated with the Tharsis bulge. North is at about 11:00. The image is approximately 140 km wide. (Viking Orbiter 039B59)

Wind streaks in Memnonia, Mars

Mars Wind streaks associated with craters in Memnonia, Mars are shown in this Viking 2 Orbiter image. The streaks appear to exhibit lighter coloring in the interior, bounded by dark side lobes. The dark areas may represent areas of erosion, while the light streaks are caused by deposition of light colored material. North is at ~11:00 and the image is about 220 km across. (Viking Orbiter 041B51)

Aureoles at the base of Olympus Mons, Mars

Mars Viking 2 Orbiter image of Martian Aureole units northeast of Olympus Mons, possibly formed by massive land slides on the flanks of the giant volcano. The image is 93 km across. North is up. (Viking Orbiter 043B20)

Biblis Patera volcano, Mars

Mars The small Martian volcano Biblis Patera is shown in this Viking 2 Orbiter image. The diameter of the exposed portion is about 100 km. Truncation of the flow features on the volcano's flanks by surrounding plains material indicates that part of the edifice is buried. Note the circular faults surrounding the caldera. North is at ~11:30 in this image, which is about 200 km across. (Viking Orbiter 044B50)

Mars polar laminated deposits

Mars Viking 2 Orbiter image of polar valleys near the north pole of Mars. Within these valleys are exposed laminated polar deposits (the light and dark stratification visible within the valleys). This image is 65 km across. North is at ~10:30. (Viking Orbiter 065B74)
