Rover Mechanical Design

The Rover design includes several innovative mechanical designs including:

Low Temperature Actuators

Custom actuators were designed from commercial components so they could function at -80C. These components include:

  • Maxon DC motors
  • Globe Planetary gearboxes
  • Castrol Bray Lubricant

Lightweight Aluminum Structures

Intricate structural designs created by involving machinists in design process:

  • "T-slot" hollowing
  • NC machining
  • Integrated Bearings

Kinematic Lander Supports

The Rover is held against the Pathfinder Lander with three stainless steel cables. Upon arrival at Mars, pyrotechnic devices will cut the cables, freeing the Rover.
