Craters in Memnonia Fossae, Mars

m04_10d.gif (95830 bytes)Mariner 4 image showing craters in the Memnonia Fossae region of Mars. The large crater cut off through the center at the right of the frame is the 156 km diameter Dejnev, centered at 25.6 S, 164.5 W. The image is 251 x 267 km and the upper left corner overlaps the lower right corner of image 9. North is at 11:30. (Mariner 4, frame 10D)

Mariner crater on Mars

m04_11e(1).gif (94332 bytes)Mariner 4 image of the crater named after it, the 151 km diameter Mariner crater at 35 S, 164 W. Running from the lower left corner of the frame through the bottom of the crater is a linear ridge which is part of Sirenum Fossae. The image was taken from 12,600 km and covers 250 km by 254 km. North is up. (Mariner 4, frame 11E)

South of Sirenum Fossae on Mars

m04_12d.gif (95769 bytes)Mariner 4 image showing a relatively featureless area south of Sirenum Fossae on Mars. A few craters can be seen in the image, which is centered at 35 S, 160 W. The picture was taken from a range of 12,400 km and is 256 by 254 km. The upper left portion of this image overlaps the lower right of image 11. North is up. (Mariner 4, frame 12D)

Light crater rims in the southern highlands of Mars

m04_13d.gif (99803 bytes)Mariner 4 image of the southern highlands south of Sirenum Fossae taken during southern mid winter. The white rims of the craters may be due to frost or clouds, but the contrast is poor. The rim at upper left may be the edge of the crater Newton. The image was taken from 12,200 km and measures 254 km by 242 km. The sun is 58 degrees from zenith and North is up. (Mariner 4, frame 13D)

Cratered highlands of Mars near 40 S, 150 W

m04_14b.gif (95468 bytes)Mariner 4 image from 12,200 km showing craters in the southern highlands of Mars. The image is 257 km across and 240 km from top to bottom. The upper left corner overlaps with image 13. The sun is shining from the northeast (upper left) 61 degrees from zenith, and north is up. (Mariner 4, frame 14B)

Surface of Mars 45 S, 144 W

m04_15e.gif (100776 bytes)Mariner 4 image showing an area of the southern highlands at 46 S, 144 W. Light levels were getting low at this point, so detail is difficult to pick out in the image and only indistinct features can be seen. The image was taken from 12,000 km and the frame is 266 km by 236 km. The sun was 67 degrees from zenith and north is at 12:30. (Mariner 4, frame 15E)

Surface of Mars near 48 S, 139 W, poor contrast

m04_16d(1).gif (99465 bytes)Mariner 4 image of Mars near 48 S, 139 W. The lower light levels at this point necessitated high contrast enhancements for this image, which gives it its grainy, layered appearance. Individual features cannot be distinguished. The image was taken from 12,000 km and the frame is 273 x 236 km. The sun is 70 degrees from the zenith and north is at 12:30. (Mariner 4, frame 16D)
