Destination drives transportation and necessity is the
mother of invention. For example, the development of the New World caused a
revolution in European naval architecture. In retrospect, the establishment of a
Martian base will drive a new generation of space propulsion to arise to make the action
of Martian colonization commercially feasible. These new innovations have been on the
drawing boards for years and are vastly higher level technology than anything we have
today. These new ideas for space travel wait for only the need and necessity for
them to be developed and eventually instituted in the space program.
