The Haiku has very simple rules:

    1)use no more than 17 syllables

    2)arrange them in 5-7-5 syllable form

    3)avoid similies and metaphores

    4)try to retain Japanese value

    Here are four samples of Basho:

    old pond

    frog jumps in

    splash

    waterjar cracks;

    I lie awake

    this icy nite

    Lightning;

    Herons cry

    Stabs the darkness.

    sick on a journey

    over parched fields

    dreams wander on.
